abstracts from the books: when I arrived n the UK, it was a cold, wet and dreary morning and the antithesis of sunnier climes like the warm beaches and hot sun beckoned me back to beautiful Barbados, but my attention was suddenly and dramatically drawn away to the Christmas decorations and lights hanging from the many buildings along the way from the airport...when my opportunity started soon after my 18th. birthday when I obtained a place on the Nurses Recruitment Scheme which was set up by the UK government in St. Michael...resilient ladies of true Bajan grit who endured some of the most hostile treatment, but persevered.and made valuable contributions to the NHS 40 years and upwards..
